Take the simple act of changing a car’s engine oil. About 3 litres per vehicle. On an average, changed every 6 months, on every car in the world. There are nearly one billion passenger cars in the world, and we haven’t even counted the trucks, trains, aircraft, and ships, and skiffs, and the tuktuks! How much oil is that, every minute, every second? Millions of gallons are manufactured every day; much of the old is thrown away – only some of it will ever be recycled. Scientists are asking, 'What if a vehicle never had to undergo an engine oil change?' We have electric vehicles coming up, also engine oils that never lose their properties over the lifespan of the vehicle. These great answers have been offered to us by nanotechnology. It got the phone battery so small, one just has to look at the cell phones from three decades ago to understand. That same technology goes into the car battery and it spins the wheels without an engine that needs oil to run and gasoline to burn. That’s just one example of the delightfully disruptive power of nanotech.
